Sept. 17, 2006
The Linda Fire Department engine was returning from a call when the crash occurred.

A head-on crash between a fire engine and a Buick sedan on Highway 99 at Encinal Road on Saturday left one man dead and four firefighters with minor injuries. The victim, a Live Oaks man, was in his mid-40's, California Highway Police said.

The fire crew told authorities that they was returning from a fire mission when the driver of the sedan going the opposite way drifted into the path of the engine.

The accident happened after 7 p.m. Traffic was diverted for more than two hours, starting at 8 p.m., and did not clear until after 10 p.m.

The firefighters, who were in an Office of Emergency Services engine, are based at the Linda Fire Department.
