DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Firefighters fought a blaze over the weekend that engulfed 30 cars at a salvage yard and caused smoke to drift across the northern part of the city.
The fire happened on Sunday at Yaw's Auto Salvage.
Flames coming from the vehicles, which were stacked four-high, shot 30 feet into the air, said Brian O'Keefe, a Des Moines Fire Department spokesman.
He said Yaw's Auto Salvage provided a forklift to remove vehicles from the stacks so firefighters could extinguish the flames below.
The heavy, black smoke drew onlookers and prompted some 911 calls, O'Keefe said.
He said an employee at the salvage yard told firefighters that he had seen teenagers in the area twice earlier in the day and told them to stay away from the cars.
Fire officials are investigating the cause of the blaze. No details on the damages were available.
