Tennessee Firefighters Help Clean Up After Hurricane Ivan

Sept. 17, 2004
Armed with chain saws instead of water hoses, the Murfreesboro Fire Department cleared the remains of a fallen tree in downtown Murfreesboro.

The damage from Ivan has reached all the way to Middle Tennessee. Several neighborhoods in the area were hit overnight by heavy rains and high winds.

Armed with chain saws instead of water hoses, the Murfreesboro Fire Department cleared the remains of a fallen tree on East Lytle Street in downtown Murfreesboro early Friday morning. Crews also worked to restore power to the area. There were reports of numerous electrical outages throughout the area Friday morning.

The City of Lawrenceburg woke to calmer skies on Friday, but it was quite a different story on Thursday night. Ivan roared through Lawrence County around 3 pm and didn't let up until late evening. Driving winds of up to fifty mph knocked down trees and sparked power outages across the city. Several businesses were without power for so long that they shut down for the day. Officials also closed Highway 64 in two different places during the storm. Those areas are now reopened.

Several school systems in the area are closed Friday due to Ivan. Coffee County Schools are closed, but extended care is open, as well as Fayetteville City Schools. Also, Cumberland, Franklin, Lawrence, Lincoln, Wayne, and Moore counties are all closed on Friday.
