(Livingston, NJ-WABC, June 18, 2004) -- A young boy is dead and the man who appears to be his father, clings to life, after both were burned in a mysterious car fire along Interstate 78 in Springfield, New Jersey.

Like any rescue, seconds count and crews knew that when they pulled up on the scene in Springfield on Interstate-78. When they arrived, a BMW 325i automobile was on fire and there were two people inside. Officials say the driver, a 50-year-old man was in bad shape and his 4-year-old son was also in trouble.

Just a few minutes before, the driver had pulled over to the shoulder of the westbound lanes for some unknown reason. At some point, the fire started inside the vehicle, possibly in the backseat where the toddler was trapped and even as crews tried to get the boy out, they couldn't and the young boy died at scene.

Now, the boy's father is at St. Barnabus is in very critical condition. Police believe this fire was an accident and they are not sure how it started.
