JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) -- A building under construction in the Indonesian capital has partially collapsed killing nine people and injuring 12 others, firefighters said Tuesday.
Builders were working on the third floor of a four-story furniture shop Monday night when it collapsed onto workers below, said Joni Aryoni of the North Jakarta Fire Department.
Nine workers were killed by the falling debris and 12 others were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, Aryoni said. Officials called off the search for survivors Tuesday, he said.
Authorities were investigating what caused the accident.
Construction accidents are common in Indonesia, where safety rules are often ignored and workers are poorly trained. Earlier this month, three workers were killed when a crane collapsed at another construction site in Jakarta.
