San Antonio Fire Dept. Scrutinized, Firefighters Degrees Being Questioned

The ten firefighters being investigated allegedly got bigger paychecks because they had more schooling, and now some say their degrees from questionable schools.
A handful of San Antonio firefighters are the focus of a department investigation to find out if they have received pay raises they did not deserve.

The ten firefighters being investigated may have gotten bigger paychecks because they supposedly had more schooling.

With a college degree, firefighters, like other professionals, can earn more money.

A Master's degree can earn a firefighter an extra $3,300.

The fire department says some firefighters have their degrees from questionable schools.

"We've just turned up several that are not accredited," San Antonio Fire Department Asst. Chief Carl Wedige said.

After an internal investigation, the fire department learned of 572 firefighters with educational incentive pay, ten got their degrees at schools like Lacrosse University.

Lacrosse does not meet the fire department's accepted accreditation standards. In fact, you can become a doctor through Lacrosse for $2,200.

Those ten firefighters no longer get that extra pay. The department says they may have to pay it back, but the practice has spread.

Of 32 applicants who applied for educational incentive pay this year, 26 were denied because they enrolled in unaccredited schools.

The fire department says it will check the credentials of schools before giving out the extra pay.
