Twelve Peapack baseball players and their coach narrowly escaped a fire on their school bus yesterday afternoon, before it and a nearby electrical pole were charred by a possible mechanical fire in Mendham Borough.

The team of seventh- and eighth-graders from Gil St. Bernard's School was on its way to Morristown-Beard School for a game when the driver and coach, Anthony Bednarsky, noticed smoke coming from the bus and pulled it over on West Main Street about 2:40 p.m.
