As John Baer pulled away in his Able Energy Inc. propane truck, he heard a pop and felt a jerk.
He jumped out and immediately saw a hose flailing wildly about, spraying highly flammable liquid propane everywhere. He ran to a supervisor at the Newton fuel depot, told him to call 911 and to evacuate the building.
He ran frantically back to the truck, scrambled underneath it and forced, first with one hand, then with two, a valve closed. Then he scurried out the other side.
The blast came three seconds later.
