More than 30 families were left homeless yesterday after fire tore through the roof of their East Orange apartment building in a blaze that smoldered more than seven hours after it began.

No one was reported injured, but the morning fire left the building uninhabitable, according to authorities, who said the cause remains under investigation.

Resident Joseph Myrtil left the Park Avenue building with clothes and shoes on his back -- in two black garbage bags thrown over his shoulders. The items were the only things salvageable from his three-bedroom apartment.
