No Fat In New Jersey Firehouse Proposal

Feb. 22, 2004
The Stewartsville Volunteer Fire Department has been in existence for over 75 years

The Stewartsville Volunteer Fire Department has been in existence for over 75 years. We are devoted to providing fire and other protection to the community. In the year 2003 we contributed more than 5,000 hours of service to the community, all without a salary to any of our members.

We have been working with the various township committees over the past seven years for a new firehouse. As recently as 2001, we were discussing an expanded facility with a cost estimate of $5.6 million. To help meet the financial interests of the township and the taxpayers, we have reduced our request for a new firehouse facility to an estimated cost of $3.2 million, including site preparation.

The reductions that we have agreed to over the past two years include the elimination of about 6,785 square feet. Further reductions will hamper our ability to serve the community or be just cost ineffective in the long term.
