A woman and a young girl are dead after an early morning fire in Cobleskill.

Firefighters said the fire broke out just before 3 a.m. at a trailer on Barnerville Road.

Seven people were inside, but only five were able to get out safely.

Police said 26-year-old Tara Bailey and 9-year-old Melissa Noellette were trapped in a bedroom.

Neighbor Tina Knapp said there was a lot of confusion trying to rescue the two girls.

A young woman and a 9-year-old girl were killed in the early morning blaze.

Knapp said, "The father was down there. He tried to see if he could wake up the two girls in the bedroom. He tried to break the windows and stuff. They were pounding on the trailer to try and get them up. But, they wouldn't wake up."

The young girl was temporarily staying at the trailer with her mother and two brothers.

State and local fire investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the fire.
