A devastating crash claimed the life of a man in Southampton, L.I., last night, police and witnesses said.
The victim's pickup truck drove off the road into a wooded area near Cooper Lane and Parrish Road and burst into flames at about 8 p.m.
"I heard someone honking and a woman screaming, 'Call the fire department! Call the fire Department!' " said Beverly Kretschmer, who lives in the area.
A man ran over to the truck and attempted to pull the victim out, but was driven back by the flames. The Samaritan was taken to a hospital with burns, a police source said.
The crash victim, whose identity was withheld pending family notification, died at the scene.
