An off-duty firefighter was arrested on Staten Island early Saturday morning for allegedly punching a police officer in the face while running away from a bar fight.

A man told police that he had gotten into a fight with two men who had pounded their fists on the car. When he pointed out the two men, one of them, the firefighter, David Gonzalez of Engine 76, ran away, police said.

Gonzalez tried to scale a fence and punched an officer who was chasing him, police said. The officer suffered a minor cut to his face.

Gonzalez is charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and trespassing. Fire officials say he will likely be suspended.
