Des Moines Fire Chief, Phillip C. Vorlander, announced two promotions within his command staff today. Current Interim Assistant Chief James F. Mason and Fire Marshal Rickey L. Moody have been promoted to the rank of Assistant Fire Chief. These promotions are effective March 17, 2003.

Previous positions: Interim Assistant Fire Chief since June of 2002 Transferred to District Chief of Hazardous Materials on June 3, 1999
Promoted to District Chief of Training on March 8, 1999
Promoted to Fire Captain on April 25, 1994
Promoted to Lieutenant on August 19, 1991
Promoted to Engineer on April 4, 1988
Started his career as a Des Moines Firefighter on January 9, 1978
Mason has specialty training in Hazardous Materials Operations, Confined Space Operations, Incident Command and Incident Management, and extensive training in Weapons of Mass Destruction.
Rickey L. Moody
Promoted to Assistant Fire Chief on March 17, 2003
Previous positions:
Promoted to Fire Marshal on June 30, 1997
Promoted to Senior Fire Inspector on January 17, 1994
Promoted to Fire Inspector on November 16, 1987
Started his career as a Des Moines Firefighter on January 22, 1979
Moody has specialty training in Fire Investigation, Fire Prevention, Incident Command and Incident Management. Moody is a member of the Downtown Emergency Planners and the International Association of Arson Investigators.
Chief Vorlander stated that he interviewed (23) applicants for these positions with (12) of those applications coming from within the Des Moines Fire Department.
