Maui firefighters put out a brush fire that destroyed a homeless encampment today in Lahaina.

Jan. 12--Maui firefighters put out a brush fire that destroyed a homeless encampment today in Lahaina.

Firefighters responded to an alarm about 3 p.m. and found the blaze in a 4,000-square-foot homeless camp mauka of Prison Street with homeless people fleeing, said Maui Fire Department spokesman Lee Mainaga.

Firefighters put out the fire by 4:30 p.m. No one was hurt.

Mainaga said a fire investigator could not determine the cause.
