OCEAN CITY, N.J. -- It took seven Ocean City firefighters 30 minutes to fully control and investigate a fire that sent one woman to the hospital with burns on her hands and feet Tuesday.
Ocean City Fire Department Capt. John Murphy said crews responded to the 800 block of 3rd Street at about 8:55 p.m. in response to a deck fire.
Murphy said the fire was located on a second-floor deck and the home's siding was also on fire.
"When we got there it was smoldering," Murphy said. "We used a couple extinguishers to extinguish it."
According to Murphy, the unidentified female homeowner tried to control the blaze herself and suffered several burns.
She was transported to Shore Medical Center in Somers Point for treatment.
In addition to controlling the fire, crews removed the home's siding to ensure the fire had not extended into the home.
Only the home's exterior was damaged, he said.
Murphy said as of Tuesday night, the fire appeared to be cause by a deck light malfunction.
