OSHA compliance at the High Point Fire Department has come with a hefty cost for the city.
Figures show that $249,829 was spent to correct problems and upgrade equipment and safety practices that were flagged by inspectors last year, according to The High Point Enterprise.
The most expensive expenditure was the $180,000 spent to replace the firefighters' turnout gear.
City officials told the newspaper that after the state agency levied a fine that was settled on at $57,000, they took a close look and safety issues throughout the city.
"The safety of our employees is what is most important," City Manager Strib Boynton said. "My assessment is that we've made incredible progress in a short amount of time."
