Dec. 06--ADAIR -- A northbound FedEx truck carrying two trailers collided with two state maintenance vehicles Wednesday afternoon north of Adair, a little after 1 p.m.
The driver was pinned inside the truck.
The FedEx truck struck a maintenance truck from behind that was carrying a flashing sign warning drivers of maintenance work ahead. The truck flipped on its side striking a truck carrying asphalt that was being used to patch the highway. Northbound traffic was backed up for over a mile.
Janet Hummingbird, Grove, was heading northbound with her husband when the accident occurred.
She went to the driver of the FedEx truck and said he was bleeding on his legs and one arm. The driver had a cell phone in his hand and asked Hummingbird to call his wife in Kansas City, Mo., to tell her that he had been in an accident and was going to the hospital.
Hummingbird then went to the driver of the maintenance truck, which was first hit by the semi. She said the driver had a bad head injury and complained that he was unable to see.
Adair firefighters rescued the driver of the FedEx truck who was trapped inside the cab.
Hummingbird said she believed the accident was caused because the driver of the FedEx truck "might have been on his cell phone," at the time of the accident and not noticed the maintenance truck right in front of him.
Mayes Emergency Trust Authority ambulances took both injured men to the hospital. In addition to Adair Fire and MESTA, Adair Police Department, Oklahoma Highway Patrol and Mayes County Emergency Services were present at the scene.
