Firefighters detained a man who tried to drive off with a West Haven fire apparatus Wednesday evening.
West Haven firefighters told police that they were helping a person on a medical call when they heard the sirens active on their apparatus parked on Main Street.
The crew saw a man in the cab who was trying to put he apparatus into drive, according to a release from the West Haven Police Department.
Firefighters pulled Wayne Gagne from the cab and detained him until police arrived.
Police say that Gagne, 63, was carrying a hunting knife with an eight-inch blade when he was arrested.
Gagne was charged with Criminal Attempt to Commit Larceny and Possession of a Dangerous Weapon.
