March 8, 2017
The Tri-Village firefighter left his home and returned with a fire apparatus.

A firefighter left his burning Chatham home and returned with a fire truck to douse the flames.

Tri-Village firefighter Jack Lanphear first used a garden hose on a fire he discovered in the garage of his home atop a steep hill.

“I was too nervous to call or text anyone; my hands were shaking,” Lanphear told the Register-Star.

Crews from 10 fire departments eventually responded to the White Mills Road fire late Monday morning.

Assistant Fire Chief Randy Goold told the newspaper that Lanphear is usually operates the pumper he drove to his own fire.

The fire damaged the garage and caused slight damage to a family room in the home that Lanphear built the home 30 years ago.
