Fire Marshal's Corner: Arson Concerns and Green Construction

March 26, 2010

On Fire Marshal's Corner this month Ed Comeau and Mike Love look at a recent rash of arson fires that plagued Northampton, MA. Joining the hosts are Fire Chief Brian Duggan and Captain John Garriepy who was the incident commander for these fires.

Chief Duggan and Captain Garriepy talk about the challeneges they face and share the preparation and training the Northampton Fire Department had gone through to give them the ability to respond and bring in mutual aid departments successfully. There are also significant lessons learned in the aftermath in terms of managing the investigation phase as well.

Ed and Mike then look at a new project by the National Association of State Fire Marshals that is focusing on the rapidly growing issues of fire safety and the environment. With more green buildings being designed and constructed than ever before.

These new methods present a challenge to the local fire and code official to make sure they are being done in a way that does not conflict with existing fire codes or present an unforeseen danger to fire fighters on the fireground during an emergency. NASFM President and Georgia State Fire Marshal Alan Shuman and NASFM Project Manager Karen Deppa join us for a in-depth discussion of the new site "Bridging the Gap."
