Calif. Firefighter Enters Blaze to Close Gas Valve

MODESTO, Calif. -- Modesto fire crews were called to an alley between 9th and 10th streets just after 1 a.m. Tuesday, where one firefighter had to walk into the flames to shut off a gas valve, officials said. The blaze was happening near J Street, according to the Modesto fire chief. No one was hurt, and the damage to a building was described as minimal. Fire crews pushed back the flames with water while the firefighter turned off the valve. The cause is under investigation.
