The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program Office announced that during the application period it had received 18,160 applications. The Program Office also announced that it had completed its initial assessment of the funds requests received. The applications have been assessed based on a variety of statutory and programmatic aspects, including breakdowns by urban, suburban and rural classifications, and requests by State.
Some highlights:
During the last five years of the grant program, this year recorded the fewest number of application, 18,160. The most applications came last year with 20,972 applications submitted.
The largest total request for funds also came last year at over $2.6 billion. The this year comes in second of the five years at over $2.3 billion.
Of the 18,160 requests this year, 11,136 were from all-volunteer departments. Rural departments represented about 78 percent of the funds requested totaling over $1.6 billion.
The Program Office expects to begin FY2006 award announcements in June.
