PA Firefighter Dies Days after Heart Attack at Call

Avis Fire Company No. 1 firefighter David Closs died Sunday after he suffered a medical emergency while working scene safety at a fire Aug. 17 in Jersey Shore Borough.

A Pennsylvania firefighter died Sunday days after suffering an apparent heart attack during a call. 

Avis Fire Company No. 1 firefighter David Closs, 67, was part of the response to a residential fire shortly before 10 p.m. Aug. 17 in Jersey Shore Borough, according to the department. While he was working scene safety a short distance from the blaze, he suffered a medical emergency.

CPR was performed on Closs, and he was taken to the hospital. He died Sunday from an apparent heart attack, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

"Dave, you will forever be carried in the hearts of all of us here at Avis," the department said in an online update. "From watching our backs of passing cars to your countless hours of helping at fundraisers, you were always there no matter what. You will be greatly missed and our memories together will be cherished."

Along with serving as an Avis firefighter, Closs had been a police officer in Marcus Hook and Kennett Square for 21 years, according to his obituary.
