Portsmouth Firefighter/EMT Edward Long has died after suffering a medical event while on-duty.

The Portsmouth Fire Department is suffering from the loss of Firefighter/EMT Edward Long who became unresponsive while returning from a call and subsequently passed away.

Despite the best efforts of his crew and staff at Sothern Ohio Medical Center Emergency Department, Ed passed away at 11:30 a.m., the department said in a Facebook post.

Long started with the Portsmouth Fire Department in 1995 and is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.

“Ed was an excellent Driver/Engineer. No one knew his truck as well as he did. No one took care of this truck as well as he did,” the department said. “Ed also was known as quite the storyteller, especially the length of his stories and the enthusiasm with which he told them.”
