Eagle Rock, VA, Assistant Fire Chief Dies of Injuries Suffered a Decade Ago

Assistant Chief Alan "Bubba" Wright was involved in a water rescue near Eagle Rock in 2016 when he was caught by a swift current.

An Eagle Rock assistant fire chief has died of injuries suffered during a swift water rescue a decade ago.

Assistant Chief Alan "Bubba" Wright was swept away by fast-moving water while assisting with rescue efforts after the area suffered extreme flooding in 2016.

Fire Chief Darryl Jones told WDBJ shortly after the incident that he initially didn't know who had been the current's victim.

"When I got him to the shore and saw the face,” Jones said.

It's unclear how long Wright was under, but he was in cardiac arrest. Fellow firefighters initiated CPR, and resuscitated him.

He died this past weekend.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
