Issue Description: The December issue of Firehouse Magazine includes feature articles on company-level drills, a CTEX 2024 preview, and an Apparatus Architect look at the District of Columbia Fire and EMS Department. Photo by Gordon Nord.

Cover Description: The Bedford Park, IL, Fire Department responded to a report of a hazardous materials leak in an industrial building. Building personnel described a chemical release that created an orange cloud. All personnel were evacuated, and command requested a Level II Hazmat response, which brought equipment from 13 neighboring departments. A Level A entry was made. A 55-gallon drum of sodium hydroxide failed, and the contents leaked out. The incident was escalated to a Level III Hazmat response for additional technicians as a precaution. The entry team reported that the drum no longer was leaking, that the area was clear of haze or a cloud and that all product was contained underneath the drum. Photo by Gordon Nord.

Dedication: Nine U.S. firefighters recently died in the line of duty. This issue of Firehouse is dedicated to these firefighters.

A firefighter who flows 250 gpm on a fire that’s both contents burning and the actual structure definitely requires a sustained water supply. Size is critical in determining water supply needs.
Curt Isakson impresses upon county and suburban departments that the approach to water supply that urban departments use often doesn't translate to their circumstances.

The District of Columbia Fire and EMS Department’s (DCFEMS) Engine Company 10 operates this 2023 Seagrave Capitol cab model. Its wheelbase is 170½ inches, and its overall length is 352 inches. The rig pumps 1,500 gpm from a 500-gallon tank. The vehicle is outfitted with a steel-reinforced front bumper that has a front intake and trash line and a low rear hosebed.
Tom Shand and Michael Wilbur found that the DCFEMS is unique in that it authors its own specifications for each major type of apparatus and details its requirements for bid submissions...
