North Carolina Firefighters Expect More Wildfires

Forestry officials in Gaston County said it's going to take more than just a few drops to eliminate the threat of fire.

Early Monday morning, a brush fire reached the edge of Lynwood Lavinder's back yard. He said it was close enough to see from his backdoor.

"I saw a line of fire," said Lavinder. "I wondered what was going on. It was fairly close to the house."

Forestry officials said it was two fires that merged into one. About 20 minutes earlier, there was another fire that was intentionally set behind the South Point Fire Department.

"They are very close. If you can fly a straight line they would be less than two miles apart," said one firefighter.

Fire investigators said they are still not sure if the fires near Lavinder's home were intentionally set.

Forestry workers in the Charlotte area worked more than a dozen fires this weekend -- all were less than four acres. One brush fire in Wilkes County grew to more than 400 acres. Firefighters said there is always a potential for a little fire to become a big problem.
