RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Monday was a busy day for firefighters in the Black Hills, who responded to an estimated 25 separate, small fires.
Two fires were reported in Spearfish Canyon, three in Custer State Park and the rest in the southern Black Hills, according to a release from fire officials. The fires ranged in size from one-tenth of an acre to 4 acres.
Fire officials said staging areas were set up. A helicopter, two single-engine air tankers and crews from the Black Hills National Forest, the National Park Service, the state and several volunteer fire departments responded.
Crews reportedly were making steady progress on the fires as of Monday evening. No buildings were threatened, no roads needed to be closed and no evacuations were necessary, fire officials said.
The fires reportedly resulted from lightning Sunday night.
