A wildfire last year easily could have turned these vacation homes into piles of ash. The forest surrounding the cabins is a jungle of dead and dying sub-alpine fir and lodgepole pine. The ground is littered with what Vern Bentley, fire management officer for the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, calls ladder fuels.
