Two Chicago firefighters were injured battling a three-alarm blaze that erupted at a building in the city's West Chatham neighborhood Tuesday.
Crews responded to the fire at a building that houses a store, where the blaze began, and apartments shortly before 6:30 a.m., according to the department. At the scene, flames burned through the roof, and heavy smoke was seen coming from building.
Two firefighters were hurt during the blaze, but their injuries weren't serious, the department said. No other injuries were reported.
Officials said heavy bars had slowed crews from entering the building where the fire started. The building will most likely need to be demolished because of the damage from the blaze.
Flames eventually spread to a neighboring building, and level 1 hazmat call was issued as a precaution. The department also enacted an EMS plan 1 as a precaution.
Crews finally were able to put out the fire just after 9 a.m. The blaze displaced 30 people and damaged nearby buildings, the department added.
