Along with saving a man trapped on a third-floor porch of a burning apartment, Utica firefighters also pulled two pet rabbits from the residential blaze.

The Utica Fire Department saved a man trapped on the third floor during an apartment fire on Saratoga Street late Wednesday night, the department said in a statement.

The department responded to a possible structure fire at 905 Saratoga Street just before 11:30 p.m. and found heavy fire coming from the rear of the building, officials said.

Officials said a fire on a third floor rear porch was extending into attic space that was converted into an apartment.

Firefighters said they saw a man trapped on the third floor through a window. The firefighters made an aggressive search and rescue and were able to save the man and two pet rabbits.

The fire was under control in about an hour, officials said.

Nine people were displaced by the fire and one occupant had an injury to their hand, firefighters said.

Officials said the fire is still under investigation.

The Utica Police Department, National Grid and others assisted at the scene.
