Heat from Weather, Blaze Leaves Four Indy Firefighters Injured
The house fire on the city's southeast side had 20 units from Indianapolis, Beech Grove and Greenwood responding, WRTV-TV reports. Crews arriving at the scene encountered a fast-moving blaze with thick plumes of black smoke, but they were able to control the fire in about 30 minutes, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department.
"The fire, which tore quickly through the entire lightweight constructed, 2 story home, made work tough for crews, all wearing 75 lbs of gear in this heat and humidity," the department said in an online update.
Three firefighters suffered heat exhaustion, and another firefighter was seriously injured with heat stroke. One of the firefighters was treated at the scene, and three were taken to the hospital.
