East Haven firefighters battled a blaze that tore through the first and second floors of an apartment complex and displaced five families.

A Connecticut firefighter suffered a severe arm injury during an apartment blaze that displaced five families Wednesday.

The fire broke out at about 5 p.m. at the Green Garden Court apartment complex in East Haven, the New Haven Register reports. Police arrived at the scene first, and officers were able to safely help an occupant out of the burning building. That individual was later taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Once firefighters reached the complex, they attacked the flames on the first and second floors. The fire forced the evacuation of multiple units.

Police Capt. Joseph Murgo told the Register that a firefighter was taken to the hospital with "a severe arm injury." No details were given about how the firefighter was injured, but he was in stable condition Wednesday night.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
