A fire that tore through several apartments of a seven-story NYCHA building in the Bronx's Soundview neighborhood injured 12 people, four critically.

Twelve people were injured with four in critical condition Tuesday after a fire tore through several apartments in a Bronx NYCHA building, officials said.

The blaze broke out just before 11 a.m. in a seven-story Sotomayor Houses tower on Watson Ave. near Rosedale Ave. in Soundview.

Firefighters braved the flames and smoke to get to several people trapped on the fourth floor crying for help.

“When we responded in there was heavy smoke and fire coming out several windows with several occupants calling for help from inside,” said Battalion Chief Peter Robb. “Members made a push to remove people both from the interior and the exterior out with the tower ladder.”

Medics took 11 victims to Jacobi Medical Center. The 12th victim was treated at the scene.

“Upon our arrival, the fire units were operating feverishly to make their rescues, and as soon as they were able to get those patients out of the building, they turned them over to EMS where we provided advanced life support care,” said Paul Miano, Deputy Assistant Chief and EMS Bronx Borough Commander.

“We had a total of 12 patients, four of which we would label as being critical. Our members operated in the back of the ambulances providing that life-saving care all the way to the hospital.”

FDNY fire marshals were investigating the cause of the fire Tuesday.

The 65-year-old NYCHA complex was renamed in 2010 after Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
