DeWITT, NY—A storage building at a truck and trailer repair company near East Syracuse collapsed after it became engulfed in flames early this morning.
Police and firefighters were called to Upstate ThermoKing, located at 6408 Collamer Road, around 1:02 a.m.
Police officers were first on the scene and when they arrived, they saw flames shooting through the roof of the large garage, said East Syracuse Fire Chief Chris Shields.
The storage building was engulfed in flames. The roof collapsed and part of the building was razed to the ground.
Several trucks inside and outside of the building were damaged, as was a trailer parked outside.
Shields said the fire started in the front right side of the building, but cause remains under investigation.
It took firefighters around one hour to get the fire under control, but crews were out extinguishing hot spots until around 4:30 a.m., Shields said.
Police and firefighters were briefly called back to the scene shortly after 7:30 a.m. for a possible rekindling of the fire, but left soon after.
No one was inside the building at the time and no injuries were reported.
Upstate ThermoKing is next door to Bull & Bear Roadhouse, which would typically be open at 1 a.m., but currently, due to the coronavirus pandemic, all bars and restaurants in New York have to close by 10 p.m. The fire appeared to have been burning for several minutes before it was reported, causing Shields to wonder if the fire would’ve been reported sooner and the damage minimized had the bar been open.
Firefighters from East Syracuse, DeWitt, Mattydale, Liverpool, Minoa, Manlius, Lyncourt and Solvay responded to the scene. North Syracuse, Clay and Cicero fire departments provided backup while the other crews were battling the fire.
