An Oklahoma firefighter suffered burns from the intense heat of battling a three-alarm commercial fire over the weekend.

The fire broke out just before 10 a.m. at a vacant building near a high school in northeast Oklahoma City, KOCO-TV reports. Wind gusts fueled the flames, and the area surrounding the scene was heavy with thick smoke from the fire. 

“Immediately, as soon as our crews got on scene, they could see fire coming between the front of the wall and roof area," Battalion Chief Sean Cobb told KFOR-TV.

“The flames were completely from floor to roof line,” he added.

Crews used numerous handlines to try to get the fire under control, the fire department stated in an online update. Aerial master streams also were deployed in order to keep the flames from spreading to a nearby building. 

During the call, a firefighter suffered first-degree burns to his forehead from the intense radiant heat generated by the fire, according to KOCO. Medics evaluated him at the scene, and he returned to battling the fire.

“The heat was just so intense it went through his protective clothing,” Cobb told KFOR.

The vacant building is considered to be a complete loss following the fire, KOCO added. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
