A Delaware City resident alerted by a smoke detector was able to escape their home before it was heavily damaged by fire.

Nov. 23—A member of the Delaware City Fire Company was injured Monday night when responding to a house fire in the High Pointe at St. Georges development, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Firefighters were called to 1305 Joseph Lane around 7:30 p.m., Assistant State Fire Marshal Michael Chionchio said, where they found flames "shooting" from the second floor of the home.

One firefighter injured his hand, Chionchio said, and was taken to Christiana Hospital. The person inside the home at the time of the fire escaped after the smoke alarms went off, Chionchio said.

The fire did an estimated $600,000 of damage, both to the burning home and the two houses on either side of it. The cause of the blaze is still unknown.
