The Honolulu Fire Department was called to the scene of a fire in Kakaako around 1:40 a.m. and found smoke emanating from a commercial warehouse building.
HFD was told that the building stored surfboards.
A public information officer from HFD told KHON 2 that once flames breached the roof, there was only so much room for crews to target the blaze with fire streams.
Crews used to defensive tactics to attack the building from all sides.
“So one thing that was really good was that the community assisted us with was that they offered us a vantage point in one of their rooms in the tower over here on the mauka side,” said the HFD officer.
