Fire Destroys IA Grocery Store

Fire tore through a historic building in Malvern that housed the community’s only grocery store.

Firefighters from up to 11 agencies were called to Malvern, as intense fire conditions swept through a downtown building Monday night.

The fire quickly spread out of control in the historic building housing Mulholland Grocery the town's only grocery store  as fire crews worked to contain it using multiple aerial streams.

The town's emergency manager told KMTV 3 News, the fire started in the back of the Mulholland Grocery building, spread upstairs and then  into the basement. The roof also collapsed during the blaze.

Mulholland Grocery first opened in the 1870s as a dry goods store and has been a family business for much of its history.
