Two children died, and multiple others were injured during a structure fire in Utica early Monday.
The fire broke out around 5:00 a.m. in a multiple story structure that left two girls, ages 6 and 7, trapped on the second floor, according to a report by WKTV Channel 2.
Prior to the fire department arriving, neighbors used a ladder to assist occupants from the second floor to safety.
When firefighters arrived, there were informed of occupants still in the home.
Utica Fire Chief Scott Ingersoll told Spectrum News 1, "Firefighters were able to break windows to the second floor, use ladders to commence a search on the second floor.”
Fire officials commended crews for taking swift actions in very adverse conditions to locate and remove the trapped girls.
Both children were transported to an area hospital where they succumbed to their injuries. The additional occupants were also transported for treatment.
