CT Shopping Mall Damaged in 3-Alarm Fire

Feb. 1, 2022
A firefighter was injured and more than a dozen left homeless after fire damaged the East Lyme shopping plaza and adjoining residences.

More than a dozen people were displaced, and a firefighter was injured, during a large fire Monday at an East Lyme shopping plaza.

The fire at Midway Plaza, 170 Flanders Road, was reported about 4:50 p.m. It took fire departments from nine shoreline towns, from Clinton to Stonington, about 4 ½ hours to put it out, Firefighter Miles Worthington said. The fire burned mostly in second-floor apartments.

Damage was significant, he said, and a firefighter was injured when something fell on him as he was dousing the flames. He was taken to the hospital and has since been discharged.

The street was closed for hours while firefighters worked at the scene.
