Nine people are dead after a fiery head-on collision in West Texas involving members of the University of the Southwest's men's and women's golf teams.
Six students and a coach were killed when a van carrying the golf teams and a pickup collided Tuesday night, NBC Today reported. Two occupants of the pickup also died.
According to officials from the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred on a two-lane road northwest of Midland-Odessa. "For unknown reasons, the Dodge pickup drove into the northbound lane and struck the Ford passenger van head on. Both vehicles caught fire and burned.”
“The USW campus community is shocked and saddened today as we mourn the loss of members of our university family. Nine passengers, including the coach, were on the university bus involved in the fatal accident. Two of the passengers are in critical condition undergoing medical treatment in Lubbock, Texas," the university shared in a Facebook post.
The crash is being investigated by the Texas Highway Patrol, with assistance from the National Transportation Safety Board.
