ME Commercial Fire Requires Multi-County Response

A massive fire in a Belfast potato processing plant required fire companies from multiple counties to assist in suppression efforts.

Firefighters from multiple departments battled a massive fire at the Penobscot McCrum potato processing plant in Belfast that leveled the business.

The fire at Penobscot McCrum was reported around 2:00 a.m., firefighters could be seen battling heavy flames. Firefighters remained on alert with concerns of propane and ammonia on site.

When the fire broke out, Penobscot McCrum employees were reported to be in the building and had safely evacuated, according to Penobscot Bay Pilot.

Waldo County officials had initially advised Belfast residents to shelter in place but lifted the recommendation after firefighters gained control of the fire.

The fire was brought under control around 10:00 a.m. this morning.
