Two Rescued at NY Dwelling Fire

March 27, 2022
Syracuse firefighters rescued two unconscious people from their burning home in city’s Salt Springs neighborhood.

Two unconscious people were pulled from a burning home Saturday night in the Salt Springs neighborhood, firefighters said.

The fire was reported at about 7:35 p.m. at a home in the 200 block of Fenway Drive, Syracuse Fire Deputy Chief John Kane said in a news release Friday night.

Fire crews got to the burning home in less than two minutes and saw heavy flames coming from the two-story private home, Kane said. An incident commander quickly requested a second alarm assignment, he said.

Bystanders told firefighters that there were people trapped on the second floor of the home, Kane said. Firefighters used ladders to climb to the second floor and enter the burning home through a window, he said.

Fire crews quickly located the two unconscious people and carried them out of the house.

Firefighters were seen giving CPR to a child on a stretcher just outside the house. While still performing chest compressions, the firefighters pushed the stretcher to an ambulance that was parked on East Fayette Street.

Firefighters assisted paramedics from AMR Ambulance on the way to the hospital. The conditions of the victims are not currently known at this time, Kane said.

A witness at the scene said both people pulled from the fire were children.

A total of 50 firefighters were called to the scene, Kane said.

Syracuse police, National Grid and the local chapter of the American Red Cross also responded to the house fire.

The Fire Investigation Bureau is currently working to determine the origin and cause of the fire, according to the release.

The 200 block of Fenway Drive remains closed and the area should be avoided at this time, Kane said.
