Jan. 26—GLASTONBURY — A fire sprinkler put out a fire in a local apartment Wednesday afternoon, and although it caused water damage to that apartment and three others in the same building, it prevented "a much greater catastrop" Fire Chief Michael Thurz said.
The fire in the Two Glastonbury Place apartment complex, off House Street and Hebron Avenue, was reported around 3:45 p.m., the chief said.
He said the apartment in which the fire occurred and two others sustained significant water damage from the sprinklers, while another apartment was less significantly damaged.
The Red Cross aided two adults from one of the damaged apartments — not the one where the fire occurred — according to the chief. Tenants in the other two units made their own arrangements, he said.
The Red Cross said in a statement that it is helping the two displaced adults with "comfort kits" of personal-care items and information on the recovery process, including tips on cleanup, notification of important contacts, and on dealing with damaged items.
The Red Cross said its caseworkers will help the displaced people with a longer-term recovery plan in the days to come.
Thurz stressed that the fire demonstrates the value of sprinklers in protecting lives and property.
