4-Alarm MA Apartment Fire Displaces 33
The smell of burning was still in the air in front of 87 Pleasant St. Friday morning.
Worcester firefighters were dispatched to the five-story mixed-use commercial and residential building at about 10:45 p.m. on Thursday night, according to District Chief Adam Roche.
When they arrived on scene, smoke was showing from two or three floors of the building and fire was showing from the commercial store of the first floor, Roche said.
The fire went up to a fourth alarm and 17 fire apparatuses responded.
The fire was under control in 30 minutes and the fire extended from the basement to the second floor, but firefighters were able to prevent it from reaching the third floor, according to Roche.
“Firefighters did a great job stopping the fire from spreading in the building,” Roche said.
Thirty-three occupants were displaced and it’s not clear when they will be allowed back in.
There was fire and smoke damage and the electricity to the building has been cut, according to Roche.
The full extent of the damage is being assessed, he said, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
The displaced residents are receiving aid from the American Red Cross, Roche said.
On Friday morning, several windows of the building were open and black soot could be seen on the wall underneath them.
