While working to put out a fire that broke out at a two-story row house, DC Fire and EMS crews also saved six dogs that had been inside the burning residence.

While putting out a residential blaze earlier this week, Washington, D.C., firefighters came to the rescue for six dogs inside a burning home earlier this week.

DC Fire and EMS crews responded to a blaze that broke out in the basement of a two-story row house Tuesday, CBS News reports. Four people had escaped the fire by the time crews arrived, but that didn't mean firefighters didn't have some four-legged residents to check on.

"When we search a building, we look for people who are trapped, and we also look for animals that are trapped," department spokesman Vito Maggiolo told CBS News. "Animals are part of people's families. They're often very precious to them."

Five dogs initially were pulled from the burning house. But a sixth canine was found under a basement table, and video footage from the scene shows firefighters administering water and oxygen to the furry survivor.

"Despite intense heat of the day & clutter conditions inside, #DCsBravest have brought the fire under control and rescued several dogs from home who are being given treatment," stated an update on the department's Twitter feed, which also posted the video footage.

Some of the rescued dogs were returned to their owners, while others were staying at an animal shelter in order for a veterinarian to check them out, according to CBS News. Overall, no people—or dogs—were injured in the incident.
