One Alabama firefighter broke his leg and another injured his ankle while battling a house fire early Wednesday.
The fire broke out at about 4 a.m. in the garage of a Home in East Limestone County, WHNT-TV reports. Crews from multiple departments—East Limestone, Oak Grove and Piney Chapel—responded to the call, and the residents inside the house at the time were able to reach safety.
Flames caused the garage to collapse, and a firefighter was injured after part of a wall fell on him. Another firefighter broke his leg after slipping on the ice.
"One of the injured firefighters has been released with a broken leg. (I am at home now)," the East Limestone Fire Department stated in a social media post. "The other is still hospitalized."
The firefighter injured by the wall collapse required surgery, according to WAFF-TV.
Piney Chapel Fire Chief Lance Pitts told WHNT that when crews arrived at the scene they found that a nearby hydrant was frozen. The ground also turned to ice because of the amount of water used to put out the flames.
