A Monroe County firefighter was overcome with heat exhaustion and extreme dehydration during a fire that tore through a single-story house.

A firefighter was injured during a fire that destroyed a Georgia home and displaced a family of eight Wednesday.

The fire happened at about 7:30 a.m. at a single-story, ranch-style house in Monroe County, according to an online update from Monroe County Emergency Services. The home's occupants had safely escaped the burning house by the time crews arrived and encountered flames shooting from the right side of the structure.

Roughly 17 firefighters battled the fire, which a resident believed had originated from the refrigerator. A closed bedroom door helped in allowing the occupants to flee through a window.

During the call, a firefighter was overcome with heat exhaustion and extreme dehydration, the county agency stated. The firefighter was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
